Overview of Respondents: Rural SA Secondary School

  • 70% of the respondents were aged 12
  • 17% were aged 13
  • 12% were aged 15
  • 68% of the respondents found the Sessions interesting
  • 41% found it worthwhile
  • 94% of the respondents found that the Session addressed the issues of:
    Communication
    Relationships
    Drinking / Drugs
    Sex
  • 70% indicated that they would like more sessions
  • 70% indicated that they would like Bernard Denner to present the next Session
  • 17% indicating a GP and 12% a Teacher or Welfare Worker to present the next Session.
  • 29% indicated that they would prefer a man to present the Session
  • 70% found his presentation interesting
  • 23% found it fun and worthwhile
  • 82% found that Bernard Denner related to their issues
  • 35% indicated that they learnt a lot about things
  • 47% felt the same as before
  • 23% felt more wise and happy with themselves
  • The participants were asked to rate Bernard's presentation on a scale from 1-10, scoring him 8.6 out of 10 for the session
  • Asked "what they would most like to talk about in future sessions" they indicated (in order of importance) the following:
Jobs for me Manners
Relationships Pregnancy / Birth
Social Skills Drugs
Career Paths Living Alone
Sexuality/Intimacy Living Together

Overview - Teachers Response

3 staff members of the school attended the Session for the Boys. One was only there for a few minutes.

  • Overall they found that the Session:
    Was valuable for them:
    Their dealings with the students would be different:
    They felt that the program was valuable:
    That they would be interested in developing the program at the school;
    That they would be interested in developing their skills to present the program.
  • They felt that Communication was an important issue for them and that self esteem and the future were important issues for adolescents.
  • They responded that Sex, Suicide/Depression, access to all health services and employment prospects/education were important adolescent health issues in their area
  • they were pleased with the overall presentation, the information contained in the Program, the new knowledge and better understanding of adolescent issues they had gained, and that the session supported them to better engage and understand adolescents.

Comments:

Improved understanding and observation of how Bernard communicates with boys.
Its Real, Gutsy stuff - Dealing with issues that these kids are dealing with now.
I would have liked to heard the full session!
An excellent presentation - worth extending to boys throughout the school.
